Academy Motorsport reveals line-ups for 2019 campaign
11 March 2019
Academy Motorsport will return to the GT4 European Series this season, with a confirmed two-car line-up. With two brand new Aston Martin Vantage GT4 cars, the team are pleased to announce Fiona James will return for another season, alongside Tom Wood, and GT4 debutant Matthew Cowley.
Wood made his British GT4 debut with Academy Motorsport in 2018 and steps up to the GT4 European Series this year, where he will race in the Pro-Am class with James, who will return to the series for her second season with Academy Motorsport.
"I'm very excited to rejoin Academy Motorsport and to be racing in Europe alongside Fiona this season. The championship is renowned as one of, if not the most, competitive GT4 championships in the world. To be racing around some of the world’s most famous Grand Prix circuits, such as Monza and the Nürburgring is something that I have been dreaming about since I started racing," said Wood.
"We’ve got some tough competition this year but I’m sure with the new Aston Martin, which I’ve already tested at Silverstone, and strong Aston Martin Racing factory engineering support for our team, we can be extremely competitive," he added.
"I am really looking forwards to another season with Academy Motorsport. Last year I raced with team owner Matt who gave me a lot of confidence. This year I have paired up with young driver, Tom Wood. He really showed his talent last year in British GT, so I am in very good company," said James.
"Can't wait to get out on the likes of Monza, which I haven't driven before, not least because we are out in the stunning new Aston Martin Vantage GT4 which is an amazing piece of machinery. It will be great to get back to some downforce again, as last year was a steep learning curve as I'd never really driven with so little downforce."
Matthew Cowley is a new face in the Academy Motorsport camp this season. Progressing from a background in single-seater racing, competing across the UK and America, Matthew is making the switch to the prestigious GT category for 2019. He will likely be sharing the driving seat with Academy Motorsport’s Managing Director, Matt Nicoll-Jones.
"After being given the opportunity to test the car at the end of last year I saw this as a fantastic chance to be involved with the iconic Aston Martin brand and to race on some of Europe's greatest circuits. With Academy Motorsport's long relationship with Aston Martin Racing there is a great fit and opportunity for me with the team," said Cowley.
"We have a strong line-up for our GT4 European Series campaign this season. A two-car entry will hopefully stand us in good stead for a competitive performance. I’m thrilled to welcome back Fiona and Tom to the team, and it’s great to have Matthew onboard for his debut season," added Nicoll-Jones.
There may be a seat available at the team, due to Matt’s other commitments. Those interested in this potential availability should contact the team directly.
