Las Moras Racing successful in final GT4 European Series Southern Cup weekend

15 October 2017

The final weekend of the GT4 European Series turned out to be very successful for GT4 European Series Northern Cup entrants Las Moras Racing Team. Duncan Huisman and Max Braams, subbing for Luc Braams, scored a double victory at Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, France.

Two weeks after the penultimate round of the GT4 European Series at Barcelona, where Ekris Motorsport clinched the overall title, the teams were back in action in the south of France. Las Moras Racing Team started the weekend with a fifth and first place in practice, while Ekris Motorsport finished sixth and twelfth. Equipe Verschuur was eleventh fastest in Free Practice 1, but didn’t set a time in the second session.

In Qualifying 1 Max Braams put the #99 McLaren 570S GT4 on pole position for the first race of the weekend, with Max Koebolt qualifying the #888 Ekris M4 GT4 on the second row. Csaba Mór was fifth fastest in the #10 McLaren 570S GT4. Julien Piguet, driving an Ekris M4 GT4, beat Duncan Huisman to pole in Qualifying 2. Ricardo van der Ende qualified the Ekris Motorsport car in sixth place, while Equipe Verschuur’s Finlay Hutchison qualified his McLaren in 22nd place.

Braams and Huisman dominated the opening race of the weekend on Saturday, with Braams executing a perfect start. Koebolt was able to catch the McLaren, but his Ekris M4 GT4 suffered a damaged suspension and the Northern Cup champion retired with a broken shock absorber.

Braams handed over his car to Huisman during the pit window and Huisman finished the race with an eight second lead after a trouble-free second part of the race for the Las Moras Racing Team. Equipe Verschuur finished the race in 22nd place.

In the final race Huisman initially dropped to third at the start, but on the Mistral Straight he moved back into second place behind Piguet, with Van der Ende moving into third place. The order remained unchanged until the mandatory pit stops, when the top three pitted together.

Braams rejoined right behind Frédéric Johais, while Henry Hassid jumped Koebolt. Braams was quicker than Johais and halfway through the lap, the Las Moras Racing Team McLaren took the lead. A couple of minutes later Koebolt overtook Johais, taking third place.

In the remaining 20 minutes Koebolt was unable to catch Hassid, who in his turn was unable to catch Braams. After 26 laps Braams crossed the line to take Las Moras Racing Team’s second win of the weekend, with Koebolt securing third place. Equipe Verschuur crossed the line in eighth place.
